Churchville Middle School

Peter Cunningham

My name is Peter Cunningham, and it is a real honor to begin my 6th year at Churchville Middle School.  It is a privilege to serve as Assistant Principal in a place with such pride and a culture conducive to student achievement.

I attended Illinois State University and graduated with a degree in History Education. Later I received my middle school endorsement from North Park University.  I chose social studies because I am passionate about teaching students to be contributing members of a democratic society.  I absolutely love middle school students because they are in the beginning stages of abstract thinking and questioning the world around them.  Consequently, this vital time makes for an exciting age group to teach.  Before becoming Assistant Principal at Churchville I spent six years teaching social studies at Zion Central Middle School in Zion.  I completed my Masters of School Leadership degree from Concordia University prior to my first year at Churchville Middle School.

While in Zion Elementary District 6, I made it a point to become involved in any school or district initiative that increased student achievement and created a positive school culture.  As a the social studies department chair, I was responsible for aligning curriculum to Common Core and State Standards, leading professional development targeting literacy for K-12 staff, the hiring and mentoring of staff members, and making data-driven decisions for content and common assessments.  As a member of the district PBIS leadership team, I helped oversee the implementation and data collection for PBIS in all schools in the district and set implementation goals unique to each school.  I was in charge of writing curriculum for a PBIS program that taught coping and social skills as well as executive functions to the student body on a weekly basis.  As a member of the School Improvement Team, I was able to spearhead a number of initiatives to target discipline problems in the classroom by implementing high-yield instructional strategies with teacher support and therefore reduce the number of disciplinary referrals and increase the level of student growth in the school.

I was also the head coach for boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, and wrestling at Zion Central Middle School and really believe in extracurricular involvement as a means to build character and positively identify with school.  I am a huge sports fan in general, but I am an avid follower of both soccer and wrestling.  I live with my beautiful wife, my 7 year-old daughter and my 4 year-old son.

I cannot begin to express how excited I am to be a Churchville Charger and I look forward to the work we have ahead of us!  Please feel free to contact me anytime at (630)832-8682 ext. 3703.
