Reading Questions to Ask at Home  (Even if you haven’t read the book!)

Fiction

  • Who is the main character?  What is he/she like (character traits)?

  • Who are the supporting (other) characters?  How do they impact the main character?

  • Describe the relationship between the main character and one of the other characters.  What is their relationship like?

  • Who is telling the story (point of view)?

  • What genre is the story (mystery, realistic fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, etc.)?  What genres do you like? Why?

  • What is the problem in the story? What do you think the characters should do to try to solve it?

  • Did the character change throughout the story?  What made them change (maybe they learned a lesson?)?

  • What lesson (theme) do you think the author is trying to teach us with this story? (Ask this one at the end of the book.)

NonFiction

  • What information is new?  What did you already know?

  • Did anything surprise you?

  • What is the most important thing the author wants you to know?

  • What are your thoughts about this topic?

  • Why do you think it is important to learn about this topic?
